Life Beyond Lighting

As part of our ongoing commitment to the environment and sustainability CEMA Lighting removes and dispose of all old traditional fittings on project sites such as fluorescent tubes and metal halide lamps prior to installing our energy-saving LED luminaires.

We are required by law to follow a strict set of guidelines to dispose of them correctly in order to protect humans and the environment from exposure to the harmful toxins they contain.

In 2013 a law was passed by UK and European governments called the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. It was introduced as a way to tackle the large amounts of toxic electrical waste and their components going into landfill or being incinerated.

According to the Environment Agency electrical equipment is the fastest growing stream of waste here in the UK. Lighting waste contains mercury and other hazardous materials that need to be handled correctly at the end of their useful life.

CEMA Lighting has an ongoing partnership with Balcan Waste (link to www.balcan.co.uk) who offer a unique lamp recycling service. Balcan collect and fully recycle all the fittings and components we remove. They have a special filtration system that ensures any mercury waste is handled in a safe controlled manner. As a result absolutely nothing goes to landfill.
